How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally
Infection in our body occurs when there is an invasion and multiplication of organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that are not normally present within the body. Our immune system protects against disease and infections. To function properly, the immune system must detect a wide variety of agents, from viruses to bacteria, and distinguish them from the organism’s own healthy tissue.
Infection can come in many ways. If we look at the common types of infection, we are talking about skin infections, cold, flu, coughing or a runny nose. I’ve written in the past about 10 quick life hacks to improve your immunity where you can find lifestyle changes that can have a big impact on your immune system. The natural substances listed below can also boost your immune system and prevent infections, or if you’ve already developed an infection, you can speed up the healing process with them.
Below are very helpful natural remedies for infections:
zinc is a mineral that has anti viral properties and can help in wound healing and tissue repair. It also has a positive effect on the immune system, and according to studies zinc lozenges decrease the duration of colds (best effect is obtained when lozenges are taken at the first sign of cold). You can take zinc supplement in the range of 15-50 mg daily. In general. 15 mg a day seems to help against most common problems. Foods that contain zinc are seafoods (especially oysters), along with milk, whole grain breads, dark meat poultry, beans and nuts like cashews.
Olive Leaf Complex
Olive leaf complex is also good for boosting the immune system and fighting infections. This is because olive leaves contain polyphenols that can fight a big variety of viruses, bacteria, yeasts and fungi. Experts recommend to take one tablespoonful (15ml) once to twice a day before eating for general maintenance. But if you have an infection, such as common cold, flu or sinus infection, the recommended dose is two 5 ml teaspoons every six hours. For serious infections such as sore throat or swollen glands it is recommended to take three teaspoons (15 ml) every six hours. During times of infection, the levels of vitamin C are rapidly depleted in the blood and in the white blood cells. Studies have found that vitamin C supplement improves the immune system and may strengthen the immune cells ability to fight infections. It has also been found that vitamin C not only speeds recovery from infections, but may also help to prevent the onset of infections. Several studies have shown that vitamin C can dramatically reduce infection time as well as boost one’s resistance to infections. The National Institution of Health recommends for adults to take 75 to 90 mg a day of vitamin C, and the upper limit is 2,000 mg a day.
Garlic is most well-known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties that help control bacterial, viral, fungal, yeast and worm infections. There is some early evidence that garlic consumption may decrease the frequency of colds in adults. Those who took garlic had fewer colds than those who took placebo, and when they did get a cold, their symptoms went away faster than those who took placebo. You can find more information in my previous article how to use garlic as a medicine.
Echinacea is widely used to fight infections, especially for common cold and other upper respiratory infections. Some people take echinacea at the first sign of a cold in order to keep the cold from developing. Other people take echinacea after the symptoms have started in order to make the symptoms less severe. And indeed research to date shows that echinacea probably modestly reduces cold symptoms, but it’s not clear whether it helps prevent colds from developing.
